Most people think of marriage as being all about love and honesty and caring and relationships. While these things are true about marriage, marriage is also about a legal union and legal binding terms.
It takes more than just love to make a marriage legal. While all states can have their own specifics, most states have the same basic requirements.
The most important thing to check on for your marriage license is the time frame. Do not wait until the last minute to get your license. However, most licenses have an expiration date. Therefore do not get too anxious and buy them real early. In many states, the licenses are valid for thirty to sixty days.
Also be certain to call and check to see what type of identification you will need. In many circumstances you will only need to show your driver’s license and write down your social security number along with personal information such as address.
If you are not a resident of the country in which you are wanting to get married in, you will likely need more identification.
In most cases, you can get married in any state that you wish regardless of where you live. However, you need to purchase the license in the state in which you plan to marry. The licenses are usually good in any county of that state.
If this is not your first marriage, you may be required to show a death certificate or a divorce decree from your first marriage. If you have just recently divorced, there may be a waiting period before you can remarry.
Most states do not require a waiting period other than for age or divorce reasons. However, some states still do. Check with your state to find out if there is a waiting period between the time that you obtain your license and the time that you can get married.
