Wayne and I have run into one of the biggest problems we’ve had in years. One we haven’t been able to find a way of settling without getting very huffy with one another.
See, we both have a passion for travel and really want to take an overseas/out of country vacation. We just can’t seem to agree on the same destination.
Ever since before I met Wayne I’ve dreamt of going to France. Not so much Paris as somewhere in the countryside. (I’m not a big city person but everyone keeps telling me I should make an exception for Paris. It will steal my heart. I’ll worry about deciding whether or not to go there if I ever get the chance to really get to France!)
Anyway, so I’ve been in France-mode for a while. I took French in both high school and college. I even based my first book, Beneath the Morvan Moon, in France. In the countryside no less, the Burgundy region. (Hey, I figured if I couldn’t get there just yet I could at least write about it and let my characters experience it!)
Anywhere in Europe actually fascinates me. Ireland runs a very close second to France. (So much so you could consider the longing to visit a tie.) But England, Germany, Austria, or Switzerland? Would love to go!
A few years back we came this close to taking a Mediterranean cruise. I would have gotten to go to France, Italy, and Spain. That would’ve rocked!
But that was the year we moved to Nashville and Wayne started a new job. We didn’t have the time anymore.
“So just book it for another time.”
Ah, this is where the battle begins. Yes, that would be the logical solution. But just as France has always beckoned to my heart, Latin America calls to Wayne. Now he’s thinking our first foreign trip should be to Brazil. Or Costa Rica. Or Belize.
I’m so not for that. I’m sure they’re all very nice places and I’d like to see them one day, but after I see France.
The way I see it, he’s always gravitated towards Mexican destinations, but these Latin American ones only came on his radar within the last eight years. I’ve yearned for France for over 20 years.
So I’m holding firm. But so is he.
And we’re getting nowhere. Both figuratively and literally.
Someone’s going to have to budge, because separate vacations are not an option.
It’ll be interesting to see how we work through this.
