I have been eager to write on marriage because there is so much of a correlation between marriage to our spouse and the covenant between us and God as born again believers. In the similar way God instituted parental roles to give us a better understanding of our relationship with Him, I believe marriage shows us a bond of what is supposed to be the deepest commitment.
In the Bible, the church is likened to the bride of Christ. Ephesians chapter 5 goes into this with instruction of how we are to be toward our spouse. 2 Corinthians 11:2 Paul says to the church, “…For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.” This is stated to convey Paul’s godly jealousy toward the church for being deceived by others who preach another “Jesus” and gospel.
Matthew 25 holds the parable told by Jesus of the 10 virgins, which are described to represent the kingdom of heaven. The 10 virgins take their lamps to go meet their bridegroom, who is later revealed as Christ. 5 of these virgins were wise bringing extra oil (I’ve heard to be representative of the Holy Spirit) and 5 were foolish not bringing any extra. While they waited and slumbered in anticipation of the bridegroom, they hear a call at midnight that the bridegroom is coming. 5 of the virgins realized they didn’t have enough oil and asked the others for some. The wise virgins had brought their own portion so the 5 foolish left to buy more. While they were away, the bridegroom came to claim His virgins for the wedding and the door was shut. When the 5 foolish virgins came back, they begged the Lord to open to them but were told that He did not know them. The point isn’t related directly to marriage in a worldly sense, but rather to always be prepared because no one knows when the second coming of Christ will be.
My prayer as I write the next several blogs on marriage is that the Lord would show me how I can be a better wife for my husband and strengthen my bond with Christ in the process. I pray others might be blessed too while following.
