You may be wondering what a bedroom makeover can have to do with bringing you and your spouse closer together in your relationship, but there’s a great deal to be said for working together on the one space in your home that represents the intimacy of your relationship. The bedroom is the heart of that, not just the sexual intimacy, but the quiet intimacies, the private moments, the snuggling, the comforting and the art of just being together.
The bedroom is where you and your spouse can just be yourselves. You do not entertain there, your children come in to visit, but they do not play in there and when you’re alone, just the two of you, in the dark of your bedroom or in the quiet early hours of dawn light – your intimacy is enhanced between the two of you.
Making Over the Bedroom
Consider making over the bedroom as a space to really reflect how the two of you feel about each other and your marriage. You can start with something as simple as painting the walls a different color. You might select some particular bits of artwork or changes the window treatments.
Several years ago, my husband and I spent a whole week haunting different furniture stores until we found the right furniture. We left it there for a month, coming back periodically until we’d decided on it. We spent a pretty chunk of change on the furniture for our bedroom – it cost more than the rest of the furniture we owned, but we loved it.
The dark wood was warm and cozy. The bed was sleigh style and it really added to the atmosphere of the room. Over the next few months, we picked out the artwork we were going to add to the bedroom, we were careful in our selections and we made it a safe haven away from the rest of our world – it was a place where we could go and just be ourselves.
Create Your Inner Sanctum
Make your bedroom an inner sanctum, a fortress that will protect you both and give you shelter and safe harbor for your intimacies. Not only will the project of actually doing it bring you closer, but it will also provide you with what you with a place to keep focused on the two of you as husband and wife, friends and lovers.
