Quiet moments can be few and far between especially if you and your spouse have demanding careers. While raising children together can be one of life’s greatest rewards, it can also consume a lot of your time, leaving few moments to quietly enjoy each other’s company alone together.
When the kids are tucked in snugly for the night, take a few moments together. Take a deep breath, exhale, and be still. Be at peace for a little while, not allowing the cares of the day to intrude. Decisions and heavy discussions can wait.
Cherish those quiet moments. Hold each other. Trade neck rubs. Massage each other’s tension away. Talk softly, do something relaxing, or just do nothing at all. While many people seem to think there should always be something going on or that silence is uncomfortable, it can be quite refreshing to spend quiet moments together not doing a thing.
Don’t feel guilty about doing nothing. You are entitled to a few calm moments each day to sit peacefully. Sharing some of those peaceful moments with the person you love is a gift you give each other. Allowing your spouse to keep some quiet moments for him or herself is also a gift. We all need quiet time to restore our minds, our bodies, and our spirits.
If you find that life seems so hectic that there is no time for quiet relaxation, you must make time. It is a necessary part of bonding, relaxing, and feeling whole. No one should be so busy that they can’t sit on the couch with their spouse for a few minutes to unwind. If you are that busy, you need to let something else go, at least occasionally.
You’ll be surprised how much better you can cope with demands when you take even a short break from cares, concerns, and responsibilities each day.
