Okay, I’m not going to say that variety is the spice of life, really I’m not. It’s just too cliché. However, a little spice never hurt anyone, and in fact, it keeps marriage fresh and interesting. The thought of spending every day for the rest of your life exactly the same way as you spent the day before can be bewildering at times. Your spouse feels the same way. No matter how much you love each other, monotony gets old. We all need some excitement, some spontaneity in our lives.
Surprising your spouse once in a while can help. Call your spouse and ask him or her to meet you at a favorite restaurant after work, instead of returning home for a regular weekday dinner. Live it up and have a little glass or wine or share a dessert.
Some weekend, visit a club that the two of you haven’t been to in years, perhaps a place you went to when you were dating. Little notes, gifts, and gestures are also a nice way to liven things up. Send a sexy text message, or mail your spouse a card at the office.
Do something completely out of the ordinary. Come home with a collection of massage oils or a great massage technique book and take turns pampering each other. Or, if you have grown too rigid in your scheduling, throw out the schedule for a day or even a week if you dare. Meat loaf on Wednesday indeed!
Skip your television show and play a board game. Take a walk or a drive. Rent a funny movie or visit a comedy club. Laughter is a great way to banish boredom.
Most of all don’t get offended if your spouse suggests loosening up or being a bit more spontaneous. Follow his or her lead and enjoy it!
