Sherry’s been doing a great series on affairs, separation and how to cope with the aftermath of the emotional and physical betrayals. But what we don’t talk about often is when the affair is much more than that – what if you found out your spouse maintained an entirely separate life from you? In the category of truth is stranger than fiction:
The Reverend was the leader of the National Baptist Convention from 1994 to 199. In 1997, his wife was charged in the burning of a mansion on the waterfront in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Reverend and an employee of the church named Bernice Edwards, as it turned out, owned the mansion. Mrs. Lyons discovered the deed and investigated the property, she drew her own conclusions from finding her husband’s clothes in the other woman’s bedroom. The Reverend was eventually charged with money laundering, grand theft, racketeering, bank fraud and tax evasion. He was convicted in 1999 of swindling companies out of more than $4 million dollars and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
From 1960 to 1994, this CBS newsman was very popular and even hosted his own news segment On the Road with Charles Kuralt. In 1997, Kuralt passed away unexpectedly and swiftly as a result of lupus. After his death, the secret of his 30-year relationship with another woman was revealed. His mistress, a woman named Patricia Shannon, lived in a cabin she and Kuralt built on his fishing retreat acreage. Shannon had to sue the estate and Kuralt’s widow in order to retain ownership of the property that she had a notarized letter protecting. The resulting legal battle gave Shannon the 110 acres and cabin property with the Kuralt family estate having to pay the property taxes.
As I said, truth is way stranger than fiction.
