Marriage Types: Polygamous

My last couple of articles have focused on various marriage types. The first discussed couples who chose to make an even stronger bond by committing through a covenant marriage. The second article took a peek into couples who were previously married and were taking part in their second marriage.

Some couples decide to take marriage to a completely new level and by pass most traditional terms and thoughts of a “normal” marriage. These couples choose to marry but not make a physical commitment to one another.

In a polygamous marriage, couples are open to dating and physical relations with other people.

Many feel that polygamy is tied to a religion or to a specific group of people. However in some cases, it is not. There are couples in our neighborhoods and from the outside appear to have a “traditional” marriage. However, they participate in an open relationship. Most of these couples only have one spouse and only live with one person.

The main question that many of ask is why these couples choose to get married if they plan to date other people. Most polygamous couples will say that they marry due to the emotional bond with their mate. They make a commitment to be soul mates. They want a companion that they can count on and grow old with. Many will also say that the relations that they have with other people are completely physical and they do not have feelings with others.

In my research on this topic I did not find any information on the vows and types of ceremonies that polygamous couples take. I was curious to know if the couple knew before the marriage that they planned to have a polygamous marriage, if the ceremony or vows would be stated differently. However some couples only choose to become polygamous after several years of marriage. When the couple marries, they plan to have a traditional marriage. After entering the marriage they decide to go down a different road.
