Maryland’s Top Family Friendly Attractions

Parts of the northeast are exploding with color right now. But, if you have children you know that leaf peeping is an activity that will only hold their attention for a couple of hours (max). When you’re done frolicking in fall’s natural bounty consider visiting the following local attractions that make Maryland one of the top states for family fun.

The National Aquarium

Even if your child is not as crazy about sea life as mine is the National Aquarium will keep him on his toes. There is so much to explore here, you are guaranteed a reprieve from late afternoon tantrums. Baltimore’s National Aquarium hosts more visitors annually than any other city attraction. And with the recent expansion of a new Australian habitat exhibit and a new outdoor waterfront park the crowds aren’t getting smaller. If you’re traveling with kids I highly recommend taking in the interactive dolphin show and the stopping by the rainforest exhibit. That’s where you will find howler monkeys leaping through the trees and scaring the exotic birds that fly from branch to branch. Another noteworthy feature is the aquarium’s Shark Quest. There’s even a program where you can have a slumber party outside the shark tank. The aquarium is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (open until 8 p.m. Friday). Tickets are $17.50 for adults and $9.50 for kids 3-11.

Maryland Science Center

What child doesn’t get a thrill out of watching his hair stand on end? Yes, that crazy electricity filled ball along with a host of other weird and wacky items are at the Maryland Science Center. You’ll love the Center’s close proximity to the National Aquarium, especially if you are only in town for a very limited time. The facility recently underwent a $35 million overhaul and it shows. The exhibits and displays are larger and more spectacular than ever. Admission is $15.75 for adults and $11.25 for children under 12. The ticket price includes access to the Hayden Planetarium, Dino Hall, Demo Stage and all current exhibits.

Camden Yards

It may sound cliché, but you really don’t have to be a die-hard baseball fan to enjoy a tour of Camden Yards. The legendary ballpark is bursting with old time charm and since it is located within walking distance of the National Aquarium and the Science Center there’s really no reason not to stop in and take a tour (or at least a few pictures). The park offers daily tours at various times throughout the year, except when day games are scheduled. Tickets are $5 for adults, and $4 for kids and seniors.
