Mastering the Lived-In Look

Mastering the lived-in look while you are on vacation can spare you from having your house ransacked. That’s the word from law enforcement officials, though they aren’t referring to your rental cottage or your outward appearance. Rather, police are encouraging folks preparing to hit the road this Labor Day weekend to follow steps in order to make it appear as though someone is occupying their home while they are away.

Some ways to avoid home invasions while you are on vacation include:

*Lock all doors.

*Secure all windows.

*Stop the mail and newspaper.

*Rig exterior lights so they turn off and on at various times; don’t leave them on during the day.

*Don’t leave garbage cans or recycle bins out.

*Arrange to have your grass cut if you are planning to be away for an extended period of time.

*Have your inside lights on timers.

*Close the drapes.

*Sort through your filing cabinets and place important documents that have your bank account number or social security number in a safe.

*Disconnect the Internet. You don’t want thieves to have access to your computer files.

*Ask a neighbor to park an extra vehicle in your driveway.

*If you have a home security system, be sure to notify the company that you plan to be away.

*Consider hiring a house sitter.

Police warn that most house break-ins are done by teenagers, who live within walking distance of your home. In addition, contrary to popular belief, officers say break-ins typically take place during the day, around 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Finally, if you are going to be gone for more than two weeks, the Institute for Home and Business Safety recommends that you shut off the water supply to individual fixtures like your washing machine, toilets and sinks. In addition, you’ll want to unplug appliances, like your toaster, microwave oven and TV.
