Actor Matthew Broderick got a bit of a bad break last Sunday when he fell off a horse and broke his collarbone. He and wife Sarah Jessica Parker of “Sex and the City” fame, were in Ireland on vacation after his seven month run of “The Odd Couple” with Nathan Lane ended in June. Broderick and Lane both starred in the hugely successful Broadway musical The Producers. Broderick’s publicist, Simon Halls, confirmed the accident, but said after being taken to County Sligo General Hospital, Matthew was treated, released, and is just in a bit of pain.
Ireland has not been good for Matthew Broderick. While the broken collarbone is not severe, he was involved in a serious accident in Northern Ireland in the late 80s. Matthew was dating actress Jennifer Grey (who oddly enough played his older sister in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and the two went to Northern Ireland for a vacation. Not used to driving on the other side of the road, Matthew hit another car head on, killing the driver, Margaret Doherty and her daughter, Anna Gallagher. Broderick had to be cut from the car and received facial lacerations and a broken thigh. He had no memory of the wreck and was cleared of any blame in the deaths of the women, but pleaded guilty to the charge of careless driving.
Matthew went on to marry Parker in 1992 and the two have a son, James. Matthew has won two Tony Awards (given for theatre performances), one for Brighton Beach Memoirs and one for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He was nominated for The Producers but lost to co-star Nathan Lane.
Hopefully Matthew will recover soon – he has quite a few projects coming up. He has two films in post production (Margaret and Bee Movie) and on that is still currently filming (Deck the Halls).
