Media Week in Review – January 28th-February 2nd

Did you have a busy week and miss some of the great blogs here in Media Reviews? That’s okay—this summary will get you caught up to speed.

We started with the week with a review of “Beyond the Horizon,” the debut novel of LDS author Judy C. Olsen. She writes of six generations of men ranging from the era of Joseph Smith down to our present day, and the lessons each of them learned.

Mr. Gumpy’s Outing” is about a proper English gentleman who agrees to take a young boy, girl, and a whole menagerie with him on his boat. As you can imagine, everyone ends up very wet, but they have a wonderful time.

We were treated to an interview with author Rebecca Shelley, author of the newly released “Red Dragon Codex,” sister to the Dragonlance series. We also found ourselves delighted by “Knuffle Bunny” and “Knuffle Bunny Too,” which just won a Caldecott Honor.

To kick off the Valentine’s season, we also read “Love: Quotes and Passages from the Heart” by B.C. Aronson, a collection of four hundred quotes and passages on this most wonderful emotion.

Author Marianne Arkins joined us for an interview, and we had a review of Carroll Hofeling Morris’s book, “The Merry-Go-Round,” about a family whose members each go on a journey of discovery and find out for themselves what’s really important in life.

LDS author Marcia Mickelson dropped by to talk with us about her inspiration to write novels “Star Shining Brightly” and “Reasonable Doubt,” and to share with us her plans to write a companion volume to “Reasonable Doubt.”

We wrapped up the week with “Snowball Launchers, Giant-Pumpkin Growers, and Other Cool Contraptions” by Tom Fox. While these projects are a little bit complex and not for the very young, your older and more mechanically-minded children will love to try their hand at secret door locks, a mobile thunderstorm detector, and a stethoscope.

We hope you enjoyed this week in Media, and that you’ll be able to join us again.
