Media Week in Review – March 24th – 29th

Were you a wee bit busy this week? No time to relax and join us here in Media Reviews? We missed you, but you don’t have to miss out on all the fun we had. Here’s a recap.

We started the week with a look at one of Lauri’s favorite TV shows, “Monk.” Tony Shalhoub stars as the quirky detective, who is dealing with grief over the death of his wife. He also has an obsessive compulsive disorder for cleanliness which adds a touch of humor to the show. Lauri warns that it’s not a show for young children, but she wouldn’t miss an episode, herself.

Tristi then reviews a show that’s a bit less beloved. “Miss Guided” is a new show on ABC this season and features a high school guidance counselor who is working through her own past while helping her students. It’s only mildly funny.

Let Me Call You Sweetheart” by Mary Higgins Clark is the story of a woman who works as a prosecuting attorney, and as such, has an eye for details. While taking her daughter in for check-ups on her facial surgery, she notices two women leaving the doctor’s office with essentially the same face. Why is the plastic surgeon creating the same face over and over again?

Book Awards: The Whitneys – The Winners and Celebration” tells us of the fun evening Tristi had as she attended the first ever Whitney Award gala. The award is to honor excellence in fiction by LDS authors, and Tristi got her picture taken with Shannon Hale. Yep, Shannon Hale. That’s right, Shannon Hale. (Can you tell Tristi was excited, and that it’s hard to maintain a third person perspective in this blog when she’s excited?)

Okay, back to business now . . .

“Gardening Wizardry for Kids” is a fun book that contains experiments children can do to help them learn about the world of botany. This book can be equally used at home or in the classroom.

The Tom and Pippo Books” by Helen Oxenbury are classics for young children and are a must-have for your home library.

Looking for fun websites for your children? Tristi warns us about MissBimbo.com, a site which objectifies women and makes the word “bimbo” a term of endearment.

Sick of Shadows” is a great cozy mystery about a young woman who is about to be married, but is murdered instead. “Princess Smartypants” is a clever children’s picture book about a princess who doesn’t want to follow tradition and marry a prince, and the way she gets out of it.

What Do People Do All Day” is a Richard Scarry classic about the folks who live in Busytown. Children a hundred years from now will still be reading Richard Scarry – he’s timeless.

We hope you enjoyed this look back at the week and that you’ll be able to join us again soon here in Media Reviews!
