This blog is part of a series on transcription. If you haven’t read the other blogs in this series, make sure to check out the summary page for a listing of all transcription blogs. For part four of this interview, please click here.
Here is part five of the interview with Amanda, the Administrative Assistant at Career Step:
If the student already has experience in the medical field, is there is “fast track” option? Career Step does not currently offer a “fast track” option. However, students are welcome to take the end of unit tests and if they achieve an 85% or above on these tests, they may move on to the next unit. Please remember, this is information that will be tested on the final exam.
Is there graduate support offered to newly graduated students, to help them get their first job? There are two levels of student enrollments at Career Step and each level is unique in its offerings. Those enrolled as Platinum students receive graduate support for up to a year after graduation. This support includes an employment and referral directory, personal employment consultations, contracts and pricing guide, a copy of “Start Your Own Successful Medical Transcription Business” and an evaluation of the student’s resume or sales letter.
The employment and referral directory contains national, regional and local transcription services in the United States which gives the student contact information for career opportunities. During a consultation with Career Step’s placement coordinator, the student learns more about interviewing, resume building, pre-employment testing and also gives the student an opportunity to ask questions. The placement coordinator can also review the student’s personal resume and provide feedback. If students want to pursue starting their own medical transcription business, “Start Your Own Successful Medical Transcription Business” is an information-packed book, rich in detail and ideas for setting up a profitable MT service.
This is what one Career Step graduate had to say about his graduate support:
“It’s nice to see that Career Step continues such support after graduation. I feel really good now about my decision last year to go with Career Step without really knowing what I was getting into at the time, and without knowing much of anything about the school. I accepted a full- time position with MedQuist. I want to thank Maren in particular, for showing me what to do with resumes and cover letters, and for offering enthusiastic encouragement when I most needed it. And big thanks to Julie Weaver too, for sending me email leads about job openings! Career Step gets high honors from this graduate.”
