Third eye meditation utilizes the mystical concept of the third eye. The third eye is believed to be located on the forehead, near the center and between the two eyebrows. The third eye is the sixth of the seven chakras.
In third eye meditation, many people find increased consciousness and this form of meditation is said to awaken psychic ability in those who practice it. In third eye meditation, you are focusing on this area of the forehead.
To practice third eye meditation, you will need a quiet space where you will be undisturbed for fifteen or twenty minutes, at minimum. This form of meditation takes time. It is very focused and not to be abruptly interrupted or stopped for best results.
Find a comfortable chair and sit straight. Sit with your hands in the meditation mudra. To do this, open your hands and place them on your knees, palms up. On each hand, the middle finger and thumb should be relaxed and lightly touching.
Close the eyes and breathe slowly with an even, relaxed breath. Concentrate on your breathing alone at the beginning of the practice and observe each inhalation and exhalation of the breath. Begin to focus your attention on the area of the third eye on the forehead.
Visualize the energy of the body moving up through the chakras of the body. The energy will move up from the base of the spine, through the torso, to the area between the shoulders at the neck and up into the skull to the third eye.
Imagine breathing through the third eye, as well as the nose and imagine the eye expanding and contracting with each breath, as with the lungs. Continue to visualize the third eye breathing with the lungs as you relax into the meditative state.
With your physical eyes closed and the third eye opened, you will begin to see within yourself with the third eye. This attention to your inner self has the ability to awaken your consciousness and build the mind, body, spirit connection. You will build greater awareness of the physical sensations of your body and your thoughts and emotions.
When you have completed your meditation, end it by moving the energy out of the third eye and back down through the chakras. As you do this, you will gradually awaken from the meditative state and then you will feel awake and relaxed.
Repeat this practice on a regular basis to gain the best results. As with all forms of meditation, your focus and visualization techniques will improve with regular, consistent practice.
