Hot dogs, ice cream, swimming parties and late-night strolls along the beach; these are just some of the many symbols of summer.
Memorial Day is the unofficial kick-off to the summer season. The holiday weekend is typically a time when families gather to spend time in the great outdoors, and more often than not, those adventures are documented and showcased in scrapbook layouts.
Fortunately, you don’t have to spend too much time or energy crafting Memorial Day-themed page designs, as most are pretty straight forward. For example, if going on a picnic is part of your Memorial Day tradition, remember to bring along your camera. Take aim at your son biting into a huge slice of watermelon or your mom diving into a bowl of potato salad. Also, snap a few candid shots of people laughing and chatting, as well as some photos of the surrounding area, be it a park, beach, or your own backyard. The photos you snap during your outdoor meal can then be added to a layout peppered with picnic-themed embellishments.
This time of year scrapbook supply shops are filled with picnic-themed products, from ant-shaped stickers to picnic basket die cuts. In addition, don’t be afraid to look through your scrapbook stash for paper that can make your picnic photos pop. For example, last year I used leftover red and white checked scrapbook paper to make a fun backdrop for a picnic theme layout. I used the red checks and embellished with red frames around the photos. I also used a bunch of picnic basket and picnic table stickers. Finally, I purchased some cute die cut utensils and dishes to add to the page. Another great way to employ checkered paper is to make a grill layout. Simply purchase a die cut grill or stickers and use them to embellish a page with your husband, dad or uncle manning the grill during a summer family cookout.
