When was the last time you memorized a scripture? For me, I know exactly when it was. It was on my mission. I’ve been home for almost 11 years now. In Sunday school this past week, the teacher gave us a challenge. We were talking about Christ being tempted by Satan after he had been fasting 40 days and 40 nights. We were talking about how he was tempted with every type of temptation that we face in this life. The physical temptations, the pride, and the temptation of power.
Each of our temptations in this life can be placed into one of those categories. However, the Savior, was most likely very weak when he faced those challenges. After all, he had been fasting for 40 days. Yet, he overcame the temptations with no problem. We are also weak, but we can also overcome.
The teacher suggested that we quietly ponder a temptation that we are facing in our life at this moment. She then said that we should look for a scripture to memorize that might help us overcome that temptation when we are facing it. We can bring that scripture to our mind, and it will help us overcome whatever we might be facing. I immediately thought of something that I struggle with almost daily. While it is not a “sin” necessarily, but more of a weakness, I thought I would give this a try. I have told my oldest child to sing a song like, I am a child of God to herself when she feels scared or sad, so why is this any different? The adversary is out there trying his best at every turn to make us feel weak, to tempt us. Memorizing a scripture might just be the tool we need to overcome the challenge that seems biggest in our lives right now, and conquer it once and for all!
