Men’s Fashion Week

Just days after the death of legendary fashion designer Gianfranco Ferre his colleagues and fans gathered to pay tribute to him in Italy during men’s fashion week. A teary-eyed crowd gave a standing ovation to pay honor to the late designer at the presentation of his summer menswear collection. The show took place exactly a week after the 62-year old designer died of a brain hemorrhage in a Milan hospital.

Ferre’s associates say the summer 2008 collection draws its inspiration from “the sea, from color scheme to fabrics shimmering like sun’s reflection on water.” The designer, known as the “architect” of fashion, also created leather jackets and a variety of sculpted shirts to round out the collection.

At the Dolce&Gabbana tent, the spring-summer collection featured army pants with multiple pockets, shirts and trousers with “updated squared camouflage patterns.” Fashion magazine editors say the highlight of the collection was a quirky array of Bermuda shorts in bright red florals put together with black floral tops as well as tight swimming trunks.

Burberry also previewed a collection described as a “mix of glam and pop,” accented with brightly colored tops in yellow, turquoise and greens and offset with a series of military-inspired jackets, tops and sweaters – all in shiny gold.

The collection also included a series of classic Burberry trench coats in a variety of fabrics including neoprene, leather and plastic. More formal pieces included tuxedo shirts and sequined tops.

Meanwhile, Missoni showed off a nautical theme for spring and summer. The collection was filled with Bermudas and sporty jackets done in a nautical theme with “lots of deep blues and turquoise set off by coral and yellow.”

Missoni designers say the intricate knit designs are suggestive of the “reflecting sea, the beach and the sky.” Other whimsical pieces featured cartoonish fish and octopus characters. Missoni T-shirts were decorated with brightly colored shells and starfish and were offset by muted colored pants.
