Yet another difficult subject. Fortunately, one which has been amply covered by the brethren. There are so many mental deficiencies that I cannot begin to address them one by one. There are many people who suffer at one point or another in their lives of mental deficiency. Merely consider the excruciating stresses which accompany life, at times soaring to perceived unmanageable highs. We wonder what actions of the mentally ill are dismissed without further glance by the Lord and which they are to be held accountable?
The Prophet Joseph Smith said that βall the minds and spirits that God ever sent into the world are susceptible of enlargement.β (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 354) This makes it very clear that growth is possible at all mental levels. We are to progress, learn and grow, period. The Prophet went on to say, β. . . there must be decision of character, aside from sympathy.β (History of the Church, 4:570.) There is a measure of accountability in all persons who participate in the mortal experience, some greater than others.
However, no one can fully understand the thought processes of the truly mentally ill. Not the pretenders, but those whose ability to reason and understand consequences have completely disappeared or are impaired. Only the Lord will be able to truly understand the state of their minds, health and true intents of their heart. We never can, not in this mortal plane.
Our responsibilities as Latter-day Saints are to be as loving, supportive and giving as possible. Prayerfully consider the actions of a mentally ill loved one and let the Spirit guide you on your own responding actions. This is the best way to interact and represent yourself best as a child of God. Through the support, caring and loving of the mentally ill you represent best the qualities of God.
Again, this topic is a huge one that must be each of you dealing with this in your personal lives, both medical and spiritual avenues. Each case is different. Each level of accountability is different. We must not judge, althought it is just as critical we not be victims. Pray, pray, pray — and research.
