As we see the number of multiple births rising, more and more people are interested in sorting out the facts and untruths. The truth is that many misconceptions exist specific to twins. For instance, most people believe twins skip a generation in a family, which is untrue. While it could, this is not a scientific fact. What you will find are a number of misconceptions that shroud multiple births, some of which we wanted to address.
For starters, you would be probably surprised to learn that some parents fear having twins, means they will end up with a quiet “good” child and one more on the wild side. Where this particular concept came from is uncertain but we can tell you that’s simply not true. Yes, you might have twins with very different personalities and each may express life differently but the fact that the two children are twins has nothing to do with it.
Many mothers are also worried that having a multiple birth automatically equates to a cesarean section. Depending on the situation, it could but this decision is not automatic. Keep in mind that you do see a higher rate of C-sections for twins simply because it usually provides a more safe way to enter the world. In other words, the birth is better controlled. However, if you want to have a normal vaginal birth, talk to your doctor to determine if this option is a possibility for you in that it could be.
For some reason, we also hear stories about twins being separated by class or by school simply because they are twins. For years, it was believed that separating twins in school was the only way for them to focus and succeed. Today, new and better studies have been conducted, finding the very opposite to be true. In other words, keeping your twins together in school might actually improve their chance of learning and developing.
Some people also assume that twins are naturally close, best friends. Yes, they can be but again, even identical twins can have very different personalities. For instance, you might end up having one boy who is highly athletic while the twin is more focused on academics. Typically, twins, whether identical or fraternal, are close. They do seem to share a special bond and almost ESP like abilities. However, you should hope they are best friends but not necessarily expect it.
As far as understanding or expecting each other’s thoughts, otherwise known as ESP, it is true that twins share a mysterious connection not found with other siblings. For instance, if one twin were to fall and be injured, it is possible the other twin would feel the pain at the site of injury, even if unaware an accident occurred. Twins will often finish each other’s sentences, share the same friends, and have an internal connection that is hard to understand. Rather than fight it, embrace this special gift.
