School has begun. While I am happy that I do not have the stress of the new academic year while being pregnant, I miss my students. They really are incredible human beings. High school is a tough age group to teach but I loved teaching high schoolers. The capacity for knowledge, understanding, and compassion came together in high school for many of my students. Having their support during my first pregnancy, after the birth of our son, and with the early weeks of my second pregnancy (and morning sickness) were such a blessing.
I have been thinking about my students a lot more often since the new school year began especially since I am not there with them. This past weekend I was reminded of my Culinary Arts students as I made two of the recipes that we had made in Culinary Arts that the students absolutely loved. One of these items was Creme Brulee, by which I got to sort of relive my class … sort of. I gave my sister-in-law a cooking lesson for her birthday; I told her I would teach her how to make Creme Brulee start to finish. It was a fun lesson, but it reminded my that I miss teaching and I miss my students.
The next day I made Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo (a rare pregnancy craving) for my husband’s family (to be followed by the chilled Creme Brulee for dessert). I had both my sister-in-law and husband helping me … it was kind of like another mini lesson except that I made my students do all the cooking as I instruct them verbally along with needed demonstrations. Nonetheless, the event of making this all time favorite (of my Culinary Arts Students) flowed much like one of my classes which again reminded me of how much I miss my students!
