Mission Organization – TV Review

Some people enjoy watching TV shows that have million dollar homes. Not me. I drool over Mission Organization on HGTV. Sad, huh? But I love watching junky rooms transformed into gleaming organized spaces in the space of a half an hour. It gives me hope for my own house.

At the beginning of each show, host Gail O’Neill tours a disorganized room in a family home. She then sends in a professional organizer to work with the family. The show has a team of organizers and a few guest organizers. I’ve seen shows on garages, kitchens, bedrooms, playrooms, family rooms, bathrooms, and even dorm rooms. Together, the family members and organizers sort and purge. The organizers usually involve the whole family, including the children.

Once the room is sorted and cleared it is painted. Often there are new floors, entertainment systems, shelves, or cabinets installed. Custom closets and new flooring are out of our budget, but it’s still nice to see what options are available. Once the room is ready, the organizers and family put the new organizational systems into place. Some of the systems are affordable. One example I loved was hooks inside a door for coats, hats, and gloves. That would really come in handy during our Colorado winters. Another show used photo boxes for all sorts of things, including baby memorabilia. I really like when the organizers use things in unexpected ways. A wine rack can become a magazine rack. A recent dorm room show used a hanging shoe rack to store belts and neckties.

While the show is only half an hour long, I know in reality it takes several days for these amazing transformations to happen, even with professional organizers and hired closet installers. Still, it’s fun to learn about simple and easy organizational ideas, to wonder what a new paint color would do to our rooms, and to dream about perfectly organized rooms.
