Mississippi Genealogy Resources

Mississippi flagMississippi is “The Magnolia State”. Are you searching for more information about your ancestors who once lived in Mississippi? There are plenty of Mississippi genealogy resources that can help you with your research. Here are a few to get started with.

Ancestry.com has a page that contains links to all of their Mississippi record collections. To access the majority of the collections, you will need to have an Ancestry.com membership. Sometimes, a collection will be offered for free. Return to their page often. Ancestry.com does a great job of letting people know when a collection is new, has been updated, or is currently free.

FamilySearch has a Wiki page about the state of Mississippi. There is a link to FamilySearch Wiki pages for each county in Mississippi. You can also find links to research tools that are outside of FamilySearch. There are also a couple of links to FamilySearch Wiki pages about some of their collections of Mississippi records.

Internment.net has cemetery records online. You can start by putting your ancestor’s name into the search engine at the top of the page. Or, you can select one of the counties in Mississippi. If there is a link attached to the county, it means that there are records from cemeteries that are located within this county.

GeneaLinks also has a search engine at the top of the page. Put in the first and last name of your ancestor. Select the record type you want to search through. Choose from: vital, birth, death, marriage, divorce, or “Genealogy”. GeneaLinks also has helpful information for genealogists who are new to Mississippi genealogy. Cyndi’s List is the most comprehensive list of links to genealogy resources on the internet. If it exists online, Cyndi’s List probably has a link to it. They have a page called “United States – Mississippi”. Start by choosing one of their many categories. The categories include: “Birth, Marriage, Death”, “Census”, “Counties”, “Military”, “Newspapers”, and more!
