I know that we all know that succeeding in business means work, work, and work. We know we need to stay focused and stay on top of our game if we are going to build a business out of nothing. But, remember the saying “all work and no play…?” Mixing in some humor, laughter, and play throughout the work day can actually make business go better…
Doesn’t humor just make everything a little easier to handle? Not to mention that even the most stressful and deadline-ridden days can be improved with a bit of play. Taking a break to wrestle with the dog, do something silly with your child, or (my favorite) watch fifteen minutes of stand-up comedy on television or a DVD can make all the difference when you are trying to relieve some stress and get some fresh ideas. I think a good laugh, a silly antic and a moment’s playful release can be just what are needed to clear a clogged brain and get the creative juices flowing again.
So, even though we need to stay focused and work hard to do what needs to be done in our businesses–we also need a little humor and play for balance. I believe this can be just one of the reasons working at home can be so fantastic–we don’t have crabby coworkers or a strict boss to keep us from cutting loose when we need to. Instead, we have ready-made playfulness and stress relief easily-available in the form of our pets, kids, favorite relaxers, etc. For me, even being able to sit down and watch a sit-com or something humorous while I eat my lunch can help me get my attitude realigned in the midst of a tough work day. Take a break, have a laugh, and then get back to work!
