Mixing Business With Vacation

Each year, it seems as if I look forward to my family’s summer vacation more than ever. This year is no exception. Things have changed somewhat at our house since last year’s Cape Cod trip. In the span of one year, we had our second child and my husband moved up into a management position. That means that I am busier at home with two little boys to take care of during the day and working from home at night after they go to bed. It also means that my husband is busier than ever, working about sixty hours each week with a forty five minute commute each way and an independent project on the side which takes up much of the little time he has left over. We are craving family time in a big way, and in a few weeks we are going to get it.

You may be wondering how home – based work fits into a week long family vacation. There are definitely logistics involved, but I have figured out how to make it work. I have very little legal work on my plate right now, so once I attend a court hearing during the week before vacation, my law practice will not require attention during my vacation save for the odd phone call or email if something urgent comes up. My blogging assignment consists of posts on a variety of topics, each with a specific number of posts per month. At the beginning of each month, I write on my calendar which topics I am writing about on which days so that I get the right amount of posts on each topic, spread out over the month. I plan to schedule fewer posts during vacation week, yet I have found that even on vacation there are a couple of hours each night where my husband and I each do a little work while we relax at the hotel. My other writing assignment consists of logging in to a web site and doing editing work, and it’s up to me how little or how much I do each week.

I am lucky that my home – based businesses are flexible enough to accommodate a family vacation because this year we need that family time more than ever. How do you work a vacation or a staycation into your home – based business’s summer schedule?
