Mobile Web: The Internet From Your Cell Phone

My cell phone provider offers the option of using the internet on my phone. I signed up for the basic service maybe six months ago, and now I don’t know what I would do without it.

The thing I use the most with it is email. With my service provider I can check my yahoo, hotmail, or aol account by simply pressing a few buttons. I get a great deal of time sensitive work related email so it’s great to be able to check my email when I’m away from home, and away from my computer. I’ve responded to emails while in traffic on the way home, as well as over coffee while I’m out for the evening. I like that I am able to stay in touch with my email without being tied to a computer screen.

Another thing mobile web is great for is checking things like weather and sports scores. I am a pretty big NHL Hockey fan. I’ve used my phone more than once this season to check on live stats from a game being played while I’m away.

Mobile web is one of those things that I think is used differently by everyone who has it. For me it’s email and sports scores. I know some people who use it to watch the news, and do things that I would typically save for times I’m in front of my computer.

It seems like more and more phones are being geared towards mobile web users. Verizon in my area has just started selling cell phones that have a flip up screen in the middle. Once you flip the screen up, there is a large keypad for easy typing. The keypad makes it easier to send email from your phone than it ever has been before.

How many of you use mobile web? What do you use it for?
