It’s the battle of the Hallmark holidays: National Bosses Day vs. Sweetest Day. Typically, National Bosses Day is celebrated on October 16th, but since the 16th falls on a Saturday this year, it was moved to October 15th. Another reason for the move is that in 2010, Sweetest Day, which is celebrated on the third Saturday in October, falls on the 16th.
What to do?
In a perfect world moms would get pampered on both days. Heh!
So what if the occasions are canned Hallmark holidays? We moms will take what we can get.
Show a little love for the stay-at-home spouse in your family. After all, they manage a household in much the same way a high-ranking CEO runs a successful Fortune 500 company: Monitoring division of labor, scheduling, budgeting, supervising, delegating, etc.
Still not convinced that moms should be treated to a few surprises today? Then consider these helpful points made by the crack editorial staff at The Chicago Tribune. According to the paper, here’s what makes a good boss:
*A good boss doesn’t strut as if she were your superior in the game of life. She understands that all power is fleeting and borrowed.
*A good boss listens. She listens well enough that she sees the problem before it turns into a crisis. But if it turns into a crisis, the good boss doesn’t hide.
*A good boss knows what you want above all: respect.
*A good boss does not work on her BlackBerry while talking to you. She does not badmouth colleagues in your presence. She tries to make everyone feel special and included.
*A good boss knows that it is the sad lot of all bosses to be resented by someone, but she genuinely tries to understand how her behavior affects others.
Sounds like a good mom to me. How about you?
