Monday Morning Funnies: Applicants That Probably Didn’t Get the Job

Happy Monday Morning! It’s time to go back to work after a long leisurely weekend of loafing around. (Yeah right–do we ever get to loaf around anymore?) Today we’re going to look at people who probably didn’t get the job.

Interviewing is definitely a skill and it’s important to not only make a good impression but to make an impression that stands out. Dressing sharply, speaking articulately, and thinking on your feet are all part of the package when it comes to interviewing well. Unfortunately, some of us don’t interview that well.

Exude an appropriate amount of confidence–One interviewee challenged the interviewer to an arm wrestle. While you want to appear strong and confident. . .wearing a fantastic suit might be a better way to do it.

Mutli-tasking is a desirable trait–But then there’s the interviewee who wore a walkman to the interview, explaining that she was great at multi-tasking because she could listen to both the interviewer and the music–all at the same time.

Companies want loyal workers–but there is such a thing as too much loyalty. One applicant told his interviewer that he would demonstrate his loyalty by having the company logo attached to his forearm.

Think carefully about your long term goals with a company–it’s one of the most frequently asked interview questions. One applicant told her interviewer that her ultimate goal in the company was to replace the person interviewing her.

Gather support before you go to the interview–But don’t look for support during the interview. One interviewee repeatedly interrupted the interviewing process to call her therapist to ask advice on how to answer the question at hand. (You kind of have to wonder what the therapist said?!)

And finally, it’s important to be honest in an interview when presenting negative aspects about yourself–Unlike one candidate who said he never finished high school because he was kidnapped and kept in a closet somewhere in Mexico and just recently escaped. (Note–”recently escaped” and “You’re hired” are not generally phrases that go together!)

Now that you have some vital tips on interviewing (or some good chuckles) go to work with gusto!
