Monday Photo Challenge – Amateur Food Photography

I have decided to post a challenge each Monday that you can do, or you can not do. My hopes in the photo challenges are to get you thinking outside the box, and taking more pictures. I want to you to try out new angles, lighting techniques and more. I also want you to photograph things you might not have otherwise though of!

If there is something you would like to see, or something that you are wanting to learn or see examples of, that I might be able to incorporate into a challenge, let me know. Most of the photographs that I show will be recent, with the exception of a few that I will pull out of my digital storage to illustrate certain points and give you a greater source of examples.

This week’s challenge:

Today’s challenge is to try out a little amateur food photography. We aren’t looking for food magazine photography, just some fun snapshots of different types of food. Focus on foods you are preparing, favorite desserts or main courses. In fact, keep your camera handy during dinner preparations and you should be able to capture a lot. I will be sharing my captures for this challenge next week on the bottom of the Monday Challenge post.

Here are two samples with different lighting to learn from in the meantime.

This photograph was taken using a flash, and I think it’s obvious in the light wash of color all over. See the next photograph for a much better look.

This photograph was taken without the flash, using natural daylight to light up the plate. It shows the true, rich colors and looks great. Try using as much natural light in your photographs or use special photography lighting, because the flash can really mess up the look you are going for.

Here’s another sample of using the flash to take a food picture. This salad is supposed to be much pinker than it shows in the photo above. See below to see what we really saw.

Here is the jello salad in all its glory. Nice, vibrant colors, that were obtained using natural lighting methods.

I wanted to show these examples so you could keep in mind good lighting practices for food photography and other photographs.

So what photograph did you take? Add your photograph to the gallery if you would like, and then let me know in the comments.
