Money Saving Idea: Throw a College Trunk Party

A college trunk party can help your student gather all of the items that he or she will need for college, keep you on budget and give everyone a reason to celebrate the milestone of going into higher learning. Friends and relatives enjoy college trunk parties, because it gives them a chance to wish their student well, all while giving them a tangible way to help during this exciting milestone.

At a trunk party, guests celebrate and bring gifts that a college student might need, such as gas cards, bedding, school supplies, dorm decor, etc.

First, purchase a large college trunk. These can be had for anywhere from $30 to $200, depending on the quality and the designer factor. You also might be able to find one inexpensively at a thrift store or for free on freecycle.

Decorate the trunk to personalize it, if you like. You can spray paint it, use contact paper, add stickers, use Modge Podge to glue photos or images from magazines, etc. You can even make decorating the trunk one of the party activities. Place the trunk the center of the room or in a prominent place. Guests can place their gifts in the trunk.

For the invitation, get creative. You can include a photo of the student, along with guidelines for gifts. Use the college colors, too. Your student may also choose to register for items at a store. If so, include that information with the invitation.

Craft some inexpensive theme food, such as cupcakes in the college colors, along with sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, pizza, etc.

Along with trunk decorating as an activity, ask guests to write down one tip about college for your student. Later, assemble the tips into a book that the student can then take with him or her to college. Don’t forget to take lots of photos and include those as well. The book will be a great reminder of all of the support, prayers and good wishes he or she has from friends and family.
