One of the biggest challenges of raising children is getting them to go to bed at night, and among the many things that interfere with this process is the natural fear of monsters. “Monsters Are Afraid of the Moon” is a great children’s picture book to help overcome that concern.
Marie was your average little girl. She had a cherry tree in her yard and she loved to climb up and eat her fill. She enjoyed playing with her cat and drawing pictures of bunnies. During the day, everything in Marie’s life was normal. But that was during the day.
As soon as Marie went to bed at night, three of the world’s scariest monsters came out to frighten her. One would pinch her nose, one would pull her hair, and the third would stick out his tongue. They were very, very scary.
Marie knew she was going to have to be clever to defeat these monsters. She thought about it for a while, and came up with a brilliant plan. Since monsters only come out at night, they must be scared of light. Marie decided to hang the moon in her room, and they would never come back.
She got a really big pair of scissors and trimmed the moon right out of the sky. Then she brought inside, hung it in a bird cage, and it shone right over her bed. The monsters left her alone.
However, this plan created another problem. Without the moon, the neighborhood cats couldn’t see. They started bumping into things. The injuries got worse and worse until the hospital was full of cats with broken legs and bad backs and hurt heads. And the rats, who used to be controlled by the cats—well, they decided it was party time. They took over the city, stealing the donuts out of everyone’s kitchens, rampaging in the streets—it wasn’t pretty.
Finally the cats went to see their king to ask for advice. The king realized that the only thing to do was to ask Marie to return the moon to the sky, and so he paid her a little visit and explained the situation. Marie was unsure—she didn’t want the monsters to come back, but she did feel sorry for the cats. The king made her a deal. He would send a soldier cat to guard her at night if she would return the moon to the sky. Monsters are afraid of cats, too, it would appear.
The deal was made, and now you know why little girls like to sleep with cats.
