Don’t just make plain old eggs, when you can make really cool ones! Try some of these ideas.
*Start by boiling eggs as usual. When cool, place them on newspaper or paper towels to protect work surfaces.
Eggs with Swirls, Swishes, and Shapes
Light a candle and drip some wax onto the eggs swirling and swishing to make different designs and shapes. When the wax cools it will harden. Once it’s hard, dip the eggs into color or paint as desired. The color won’t penetrate the wax. When eggs are dry, remove wax to reveal designs.
*An adult will need to do the first step or at least supervise older children with the wax technique.
If you prefer to avoid hot wax, you can use glue. It takes longer, because the glue will need to dry thoroughly, but it provides a similar effect without using hot wax.
Eggs with Stripes
Wrap tape around eggs before dipping or painting. As the color begins to dry, remove tape. Some color will likely seep inside the edges of the tape, but it still makes a cool effect. Stripes can also be made using the glue method above, or by using glue once color has dried and topping the glue with glitter.
Eggs with Texture
Wrap a piece of lace or mesh fabric around a cooled egg. Secure fabric firmly in place. Lightly sponge on egg color or paint to create a lace or mesh pattern. You can do the whole egg or just parts of it to create an interesting look.
Three-Dimensional Designs
Glue sequins randomly to pre-colored eggs. You can also glue on other items such as tiny ribbon roses, tiny plastic charms, or designs made from craft foam. Miniature craft foam letters can also be used to spell out names or “Happy Easter.”
