More Creatively Frugal Uses for Marshmallows

I spend a great deal of time in my kitchen, and I am always looking for short cuts and other uses for products that I often have on hand. I discovered a few uses for marshmallows that I shared with you in the previous article, and I plan to share the rest right here.

Spread It Thin

When I taught preschool, we used to bake treats with the children often. Our favorite was cupcakes, but spreading frosting was messy, not to mention expensive with a classroom full of about fifteen kids. A friend of mine told me to try a marshmallow. I thought she was crazy until I tried it, now we love to do that. About a minute before you are ready to remove the cupcakes from the oven, place a large marshmallow on top (you can also try some smaller colored marshmallows for a colorful effect). Allow the cupcakes to bake one more minute and remove from the oven. You should have a nice, delicious frosting! Yummy!

Cereal Fun

Do your kids love that expensive, unhealthy cereal from the grocery store? Try making your own healthier version at home. While there is nothing healthy about a marshmallow, there is about certain cereals. Our favorite is to buy a box of Cheerios, sometimes plain, sometimes honey nut. We pop several mini marshmallows into our cereal bowl and yum, yum!

Fillings and Layers

Use marshmallows as an added surprise in cookies, pies, cakes and other foods. They are a nice surprise and taste great! You can layer them in a pie crust as the bottom layer, or melt them and spread them between cake layers. But feel free to leave them whole and use them too. Place one great big marshmallow in the middle of a cupcake as a nice surprise when you bite right through. Delicious!
