A couple of days ago, I started a series on great careers as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. The rankings are based on preparation necessary, resiliancy to outsourcing, potential job market among a few other factors. While I would still argue that the best job is the one you love to get up and go to in the morning, these are definitely some fields that you should be watching if you’re just starting out or thinking of changing careers.
Curriculum Specialist
Surprisingly this is one of the fastest growing jobs around. Your job is to help a district choose curriculum and more importantly help the teaching staff implement it correctly. Supposedly, it’s very pleasant because you are still helping people, yet you avoid the frustrations that come with being in the classroom. However, I would have to argue that how pleasant this job is highly depends on how your school and/or district is organized. This can be at the top of the most rewarding jobs in the board of education, or it can be at the bottom as the worst of the worst. The typical route to get to be a curriculum specialist, or staff developer is to get certified as a teacher and then possibly even have a master’s degree. The median salary for this job is $63,200.
Dentistry
This is supposedly the best of the best careers when it comes to the health field–if you don’t mind peering into people’s mouths all day. You can live anywhere and you’ll never go out of demand. People need dentists everywhere. Interesting to note is that unlike a lot of other professions, most dentists stay in their career until retirement–signifying that probably most dentists are very happy with their chosen profession. Another plus is that unlike medical doctors, dentists have regular office hours and generally aren’t on call at off times of the night. The median salary is $120,864.
