Fundraiser
Personally, this is my nightmare job. But many people enjoy being a development director. Most of what a development director does is developing relationships with donors and ensuring that their donors have a ‘vested interest’ in the organization for which they work. Development directors also need to develop campaigns, host events and “sell” the organization’s mission and vision to prospective donors. Most development directors get training on the job although places like the Foundation Center in New York City offer courses. The median salary is $76,200.
Genetic Counselor
If you are highly interested in medical careers but want to avoid probing at people, blood and guts–this might be the career option for you. A higher degree is necessary here–generally a bachelors in some science or health related field, plus a Master’s degree in genetic counseling and you’ll need to pass the examination of the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Another plus is that your job is essentially to provide options and support which makes you an automatic ally to your clients. The median salary for this job is $71,100.
Government Manager
We’ve already talked about how Uncle Same is one of the better employment opportunities around. The United States government is hiring some 200,000 new employees over the course of the next year or so. Plus it’s very difficult to get fired from a government job. But if you hate your job, it’s relatively easy to switch and apply for something else. What’s more is some 80% of government jobs are managerial in nature (as opposed to less than a quarter of jobs in the private sector that are managerial). Sadly, the government doesn’t necessarily need to be mindful of it’s budget. (Yes–I know that’s a topic for debate. But the fact remains, government jobs aren’t going anywhere.) And the median salary for a managerial position in the government is a whopping $97,900!
