More Great Careers: Higher Education Administrator to Librarian

This is the blog to watch if you’re looking to change careers or are just starting to consider what your career options will be. The best careers are chosen based a variety of factors including prestige, pay, and job security.

Higher Education Administrator

If you don’t like little kids but you like the thought of working a typical school year (summers off, Christmas break, etc.) you might like working at a University. Management jobs abound because universities have to supply a variety of services to resident students. Everything from managing the custodial services to working in the registrar’s office; opportunities abound. Generally speaking, you have to have at least a Master’s degree and often a doctorate though. Politics on major universities can be seriously difficult to deal with as well. The median salary for this job is $103,000.

Landscape Architect

This job goes well beyond just designing rich people’s gardens. You could also find yourself designing sustainability projects for urban gardens or you could work on helping design restored wetlands. The major downside is dealing with the maze of zoning and regulations. However, if you’re an avid environmentalist and enjoy designing–this might be a great career. Typically, you can enter the career with a bachelor’s degree and a one year apprenticeship. However, if you have a degree in something else, you can do a 3 year Master’s program. The median salary for this job is $64,200.

Librarian

I often joke that in my next life I’ll be a librarian. Librarians must be skilled researchers and be fairly tech savvy to navigate the wealth of information out there both in print and in digital records. What seems particularly enjoyable to me is the idea that while you’re helping others look up what they need you may well be learning something new in the process. A good librarian job requires a Master’s degree in library sciences. The median salary for this job is $51,400.
