Halloween is less than two weeks away. Do you know where you will be celebrating the creepy night? Your options are virtually limitless given the incredible amount of Halloween-related festivals, parties, and attractions being offered around the nation. I’ve covered quite a few of them in this blog. However, just when I think I’ve completed my list I find a few more frightful delights… like these:
PENNSYLVANIA
“Terror Behind the Walls” is not for the faint of heart. If you frighten easily you’ll want to stay away from Pennsylvania’s former Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Or, at least wait until they offer family nights (that’s when event organizers lower the fear factor). This event is such a major component of the city’s fall activities that local restaurants offer special Halloween dinner menus to run in conjunction with it. In addition, area hotels are currently running Halloween specials, discounts and package deals so you don’t have to drive all the way home in your petrified state.
MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN
The two neighboring states in the Upper Midwest offer some outstanding family-friendly events leading up to All Hallows Eve. In Anoka, Minnesota, which claims to be the Halloween Capital of the World, the entire town comes together to participate in a massive costume parade that was started in 1920. Over in Wisconsin, the annual Mauston Pumpkin Bash features games, a pumpkin catapult and hay rides.
MASSACHUSETTS
What’s a Halloween without witches? And what city is best known for giving visitors a crash course in witches? Salem, Massachusetts, of course. The city was home to the notorious 1962 witch trials and each Halloween it plays host to the Salem Haunted Happenings, which features a big parade, walking tours and haunted houses. In addition, the Salem Wax Museum holds its own Halloween-related events, next to the Tricentennial Witch Trials Memorial.
