More Low Cost Treats for Fourth of July

Here are some simple, low cost, and cute ideas for tasty treats on Fourth of July.

All you need is cake mix and frosting!

Cupcake Flag

Items Needed:

1) Your favorite cake mix (at least three boxes)

2) Eggs, oil, or other ingredients according to package directions

3) 3 packages of your favorite white frosting mix or 3 batches of your favorite homemade frosting recipe

4) Mini muffin tins

5) Paper Muffin cups (in white or patriotic colors)

Directions:

Just make up the mini cupcakes according to the package directions. Check on them a few minutes sooner than you would regular size cupcakes.

When they are done baking, allow to cool completely.

Separate the frosting into separate bowls. Leave one bowl white and add red and blue food coloring to the other bowls until you achieve the desired depth of color. Mix in color thoroughly.

Frost the mini cupcakes with red, white, and blue frosting and arrange them on the table to look like the American flag. For about $6.00 you’ll have a treat that everyone will love.

*You can do the same thing with large cupcakes, just add additional cake mixes and frosting as necessary.

Flag Cake

Mix up your favorite cake mix and bake in a 13” x 9” pan. Allow to cool. Divide frosting into three separate bowls and food coloring to two (you will probably want to use two packages of frosting mix, leaving one white, and splitting the other in half to add color). Frost the cake with white frosting and then decorate with colored frosting using a cake decorating bag. If you don’t have one, spoon frosting into a Baggie, cut off the tip of one bottom corner, and gently squeeze colored icing onto the cake in the appropriate areas. This cake will only cost you about $3.00 and should easily serve 9-12 people.
