More Memorial Day Deals- 2011

pile of books If you are someone who has the day off of work tomorrow, then you will have the opportunity to check out some of the Memorial Day sales. These deals traditionally continue through the entire three day Memorial Day weekend. This means you can still find some great sales on Monday, May 30, 2011.

Your children will have the day off of school on Memorial Day. Hopefully, you work for a company that also gave you the day off, so you can spend some time together. If you are not planning on heading out to a BBQ or a party on Monday, then you will need to find something else to entertain your children with. This is a great time to get out of the house, do some shopping, and check out the Memorial Day sales at stores that your kids will enjoy visiting.

I spent several years working at a big chain bookstore. There have been many occasions when I was scheduled to work the entire Memorial Day three day weekend. For whatever reason, retail workers don’t usually get the day off on federal holidays.

I always assumed it was because the people at the top of the corporation wanted to be able to sit at BBQs with their family and fantasize about how much money their company would be making that weekend. One would assume that the combination of a big sale and three days in a row when most people would be off of work and school would bring in the people. In my experience, it does bring in the people, who browse for hours without buying much of anything. It is no fun at all to work retail on a holiday weekend.

Naturally, both big chain bookstores have sales going on this weekend. Borders has a “Buy one paperback book, get the second paperback book for 50% off” sale right now. Visit the Borders Facebook page and click the “like” button, and you will get access to a lot of coupons. One is for 40% off any one item, and can be used in the store, or on the Borders website. If you post a couple of badges onto your Facebook wall, you can get a few more coupons.

Barnes & Noble has started their Kids Summer Reading program. You can download a reading journal from their website, or pick one up in the stores. Kids need to read eight books, and log them in the journal. This will earn them one free Kids book. If you buy two Judy Moody or Stink Books your child gets a Judy Moody & Stink Summer Tote for free.

Kohl’s has a Two Day Memorial Day sale, where you can get 50% off of sunglasses, sandals for women, Summer fashion tops and bottoms for kids and infants, and shorts and capris for women. You can get $10.00 Kohl’s cash for every $50.00 you spend through Monday, May 30, 2011.
