More Moonbear Books by Frank Asch

As promised yesterday, here are some more books in the popular “Moonbear” series by Frank Asch.

First is “Moondance.” One night, Bear and Little Bird were sitting together looking at the sky when Bear said he wished he could dance with the moon, but he thought the moon was too special to want to dance with him. Little Bird suggested he might dance with the clouds instead, but even when he asked politely, the clouds stayed in the sky and wouldn’t come down to dance with him. Bear went to sleep a little discouraged that night, but when he woke up, he saw that it was a foggy day outside. The clouds had come down to dance with him! He had a wonderful morning dancing with the clouds, but as the day got warmer, the fog lifted. Bear wondered if he could have done something to offend them. But Little Bird pointed out that clouds have work to do in the sky. Sure enough, the clouds sent down rain, and Bear danced with the rain. Hmmm – if the clouds would come down to dance with him, maybe the moon would too? That night he asked the moon to come down, and then he saw the reflection of the moon in a puddle left over from the rain. He danced and danced with the moon’s reflection, perfectly happy. (This book was published in 1993 by Scholastic.)

In “Moonbear’s Pet,” we meet a few friend named Splash. While playing in the pond, Bear finds a cute little fishy. He takes her home to be his pet, and names her “Splash” because of the sound she makes when he puts her in the bowl. She was a great pet – Bear took her everywhere in her bowl. She went outside to play, and she even came along to the grocery store! Every night, Bear told her bedtime stories, and every morning Little Bird brought her a present, like a shell or a pebble. As the days passed, Little Bird noticed something – Splash was growing legs! Would she turn into a bear, or a bird? Bear and Little Bird had a fight over it – and decided not to visit each other until Splash was done changing. They’d put her back in the pond and just see who she chose to look like. It was a long and lonely time – Bear and Little Bird didn’t play together at all. At the end of a month, they met at the pond to solve the mystery. But Splash hadn’t turned into a bear or a bird. She was a frog, and she invited them to go for a swim. Bear and Little Bird are friends again. (This book was published in 1997 by Simon and Schuster.)

Our last Moonbear book for today is “Moonbear’s Bargain.” Bear wishes he could learn to fly, and Little Bird wants to be big. So they make a bargain – Bear will teach Little Bird how to be big in exchange for flying lessons from Little Bird. Bear makes Little Bird some pretty big meals and teaches him how to lift weights, but nothing worked. Finally, Bear planted a pumpkin and carved a picture of Little Bird on the side. As the pumpkin grew, so did the picture. Finally, there was a big Little Bird! Then it was Bear’s turn – flying lesson time! But it didn’t matter how many times Bear jumped and flapped his arms, he couldn’t fly. So Little Bird took him shopping. They got everything they would need to make a kite, and they painted Bear on it. Sure enough, Bear could now fly! (This book was published in 1999 by Simon and Schuster.)

These classic children’s books will delight your 2-6 year old child.
