More Out of the Box Halloween Costumes

Continuing the trash to treasure concept from yesterday’s article, Out of the Box Halloween Costumes, I have a couple more ideas to share. Creating costumes out of old boxes is a cheap and easy way to have a fun and unique costume. Boxes can be had easily by just checking your basement or garage or asking around to friends, relatives and neighbors. You can also request them from local retail establishments and usually they are happy to provide them free of charge.

So grab a box and try one of these ideas for a costume.

Lego’s

You need a small to medium rectangular shaped box. Cut the arm holes out and paint the box whatever color you would like. The child should wear a sweat suit or turtleneck/pants combo in that same color. Find six plastic containers all of the same size (butter, cream cheese, etc) You will need to paint those to match the color of the box. Attach them with glue to the flat top part of the box. For an added idea you can add a small box to their head and glue on container on top and paint to match.

Pair of Dice

If you have two children you can create a “pair of dice” or you can just make one and be just a one die. Paint the boxes all white. You can use felt, construction paper or fabric to cut out 21 black circles per child. Glue them in place on all sides. Cut out two armholes and a hole for the neck. Have the children wear a black sweat suit or black turtleneck and pants. There’s your pair of dice.

Piece of Furniture

This one you can get creative with. If you decide to do a bed, you can use a large box, and have the face hole be the person sleeping under the covers. Paint on or glue on an old blanket and sheet set. You don’t have to have an actual pillow but paint one around the face hole. This is really cute. Have the child wear slippers on their feet. You can also be a dresser. You need a long box, paint drawers on the box and cut slits where the drawers would pull out. Stick socks through one slit, underwear through another and perhaps a shirt sleeve through another. Add actual drawer pulls from an old dresser or you could paint or create your own out of pipe cleaners. This could work for an end table by doing the same thing only have a smaller sized box. Have it fall a bit lower on their body, add a lamp shade to their head and cut out the shape of a lamp and glue to the top of the box. You could also glue an old remote, old books or coaster to the top of the box.

Have fun and be creative! You’d be surprised what types of costumes you could put together finding things around your house. Remember, trash to treasure is a frugal way of life!
