Yesterday, I posted a couple of blogs regarding painting your home’s interior and exterior. I also listed a few popular color choices. Today my sister-in-law (our resident interior designer) called to tell me she read the blogs and had a few more ideas. I often defer to her suggestions so this phone call was not at all unusual.
According to my lovely sister-in-law, “Eco-Luxe” is another hot color palette this year. As its name suggests the colors reflect all that is natural. The colors include Wildwood Stables, Giant Sequoia, Spruce Hollow, Water Fowl, Timbermine, Woonsocket Bronze and Bulldog. The colors could be accented with woven fabrics including raffia, cotton, linen and burlap to play off nature’s patterns.
If you want to get ahead of the game consider stocking up on red paint. My sister-in-law says red will be in high demand with the upcoming 2008 Olympics being hosted by China. She said the focus is on clean, clear reds — not muddied tones — more of an Asian color palette than a deep red.
Other hot trends in painting: Texture is in. Rag rolling and sponging are out. Decorative painting with naturally occurring marble or granite finishes is also hot, as is sheen striping—a technique used to give interior walls an elegant look.
Another tip: before driving to the paint store survey your existing furniture and decorations. You may be surprised to find out that much of your décor is in the same color family. Don’t be embarrassed if it is, experts say most homeowners rarely stray from their favorite colors. In fact, if a pre-existing color scheme exists, embrace it, and try to design around it. For example, if your couch, coffee table and end tables all have brown hues, then look for a complementary color such as a taupe or buttery yellow to paint your walls.
