Yesterday, in New Ways with Old Tile we talked about cleaning, re-grouting, and finding ways to use less than favored tile colors to your advantage. One of the best things about tile in an unusual color is that everyone else won’t have the same thing. You can play up the color or tone it down, but if you do it right, it will look like it was intended as part of your very original design plan.
You can always use your imagination and try something a bit more daring than the previous suggestions. Instead of a crisp white against turquoise, you might try tangerine or chocolate brown. In doing so, take care to give the space a modern retro look, otherwise it will simply feel dated. Add some modern touches to give it a fresh look.
Adding layers works too. Add layers of fabric, such as sheers inside a typical shower curtain. Drape layer over layer, adding deeper shades of color with each layer. Take that pink up a notch, all the way to burgundy and use the deeper colors throughout the space.
Changing your flooring can make a big difference too. If the tiles, walls, and flooring are the same color, paint non-tiled walls a different color. Changing the flooring will make an impact, but it if can’t change it now, or cover largest part of it with an attractive accent rug.
A few accessories in the same (or a similar) shade as the tile will help repeat the color throughout the space so it doesn’t stand like a sore thumb. Don’t let pink tile become the pink elephant in the room. Again, the idea is to make it look as if it is part of the design plan (in fact, it is as you are now creating your design plan with the tile as your inspiration).
