More Tips for Hiking with a Baby

Now that you know how critical it is to plan ahead before embarking on a trip to the wilderness with your baby it’s time to discuss other tips to make your trek memorable.

First of all, if you are planning to hike in any one of our country’s awe-inspiring National Parks you should know that there are rules that prohibit the disposal of human waste within 100 feet of a water source or camp site, or within sight of a trail. The National Park Service has also adopted principles from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, which recommend that human waste be buried 6 to 8 inches deep and that washing (whether it’s dishes, your own body or your baby’s) be done with water carried 200 feet away from streams or lakes, using small amounts of biodegradable soap. Some parks require hikers to haul out all human waste. Keep this in mind when you are hiking with a baby. You might even consider going the extra mile and packing cloth diapers. Brands such as Wonderoos and FuzziBunz are absorbent and fast drying especially if you leave them hanging from your tent or backpack in the midday sun. If you opt to bring along disposable diapers remember to bring enough plastic bags to seal soiled diapers and carry them out.

Speaking of dirty diapers, campsites are not known for being the cleanest places in the world. Be sure to pack extra soap, antibacterial wipes or gels to stay clean. You can also use a damp cloth and some soap to wipe off your baby at the end of the day.

You can cut down on the mess (and visits by hungry bears) by packing your food and personal items (such as toothpaste) in airtight containers. And be sure to pick up all of the Cheerios or other snacks your baby throws to the ground at mealtime.

Finally, don’t forget to pack some of your baby’s favorite items. Whether it’s a book, a favorite snack or a stuffed friend you will find that a couple of small items will prove to be a big help when your baby tires of his new surroundings and wants a familiar item to remind him of home.
