Regular readers of this blog know that I am all about finding new ways to take the hassle out of the time-consuming process of tracking down the best online airfares. I’ve shared a few of my standbys in previous blogs and have a few more to add in this post.
BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS
It’s not a bad idea to add a few new fare-comparison websites to your list of “regulars.” I’m guilty as anyone when it comes to sticking with tried and true favorites such as Kayak, BookingBuddy.com, SideStep, Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity, but several new fare-comparison websites have joined the mix in the last few months.
For example, a new site called Vayama, which specializes in international fares, is one that comes highly recommended by my cousin who flies abroad on a regular basis. It offers an outstanding selection of fares, some of which are not available anywhere else online.
Another new option is CFares, which is a membership-only site. It too deals exclusively with overseas flights. Its home page claims it finds fares from airlines, travel sites, and wholesalers. But as I mentioned earlier, you must pay a fee to get access to the best fares. Gold-level members may use the site for free, but for $50 per year, Platinum members have access to even lower fares. Though determining whether or not the $50 fee is worth it is almost impossible to calculate.
BOOK EARLY
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again if you plan to travel during peak seasons it’s best to book well in advance. This means if you have plans to fly somewhere this summer you should be searching the Web for airfares right now. Likewise, if you plan to fly to grandma’s house for Thanksgiving or Christmas you should start pricing flights no later than July.
BOOK MIDWEEK
Finally, this last bit of advice has served me well over the years. Forget about spending your weekends searching the Internet for flights. Rather, set aside time on Tuesdays–that’s when airlines tend to release new fare sales. In addition, carriers also post last-minute airfares for the upcoming weekends on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
