Sure, we all know about “re-gifting,” which may be the quintessential holiday recycling method (when used cautiously). However, there are some other methods that work very well, allowing us to save materials, and avoid not only waste but also avoid extra purchases.
Gift Wrapping Materials
Many people save and reuse wrapping paper and bows from previous years, and of course, those great gift bags (minus the tag). You can also use other wrapping paper from other holidays, by simply turning it inside out. Use it plain, for pretty white packages that can be decorated with ribbons and trinkets for a festive touch. Alternatively, you can use stamps to decorate the white side of the paper for a holiday touch.
Ribbon and Fabric Scraps
Use leftover ribbon and fabric scraps from various sewing or craft projects to make pretty bows for your packages. Cut into strips, form into loops, and staple to a small piece of scrap cardboard. Repeat until you have a nice, full bow. On the other hand, you can simply tie a simple bow if you have long strips of ribbon or pretty fabric.
Old Decorations
Maybe that set of ornaments you once loved is no longer a full set. They do break and get scratched up over time. You can still use the ones you have left to fill a bowl or hang from a curtain rod, if there aren’t enough left to use on the tree. A lid from a Christmas cookie tin makes a great candle plate. You can also use pieces that may once have been part of another display and that are still intact, discarding any damaged parts. Miniature pine cones, candy canes, floral elements, and the like can be used to create new wreaths or centerpieces. Look at old things in a new light to use what you already have in the best ways. You might just be surprised by what you can come up with this holiday season.
