Yesterday we looked at some ways to save money while living on one income. Here are some more benefits of living on one income and ways to save money.
Buy generic products. This might include pharmaceuticals which are often cheaper than the brand names as well as grocery items. Just a word of caution on this: If you or your spouse is watching your weight, sometimes the generic product has a higher calorie or sugar content, so check labels carefully. It’s really a bit of trial and error. We buy a lot of generic products but on some, I definitely prefer the brand name.
Don’t think you always have to have the best of everything. When we first married we had second hand furniture and we laid sea grass matting on all our floors as that was all we could afford. We had it for years and many people admired our natural look.
To save money on home decorating, do it yourself. Try your hand at painting, wallpapering, laying floor and wall ceramic tiles, laying vinyl flooring, restoring furniture. We’d never have thought of attempting to do any of these things, if it hadn’t been for a case of economic necessity. You never know what you can do and what you are capable of till you try. You might just find a new skill in the process.
I’m in no way a naturally crafty person who is good with her hands but still Mick and I have done all of these together at various times on our married life. Not only are these activities you can do as a couple but there is a certain satisfaction and pride in having done the job yourself. It can be a lot of fun doing them as a couple and it is also a good bonding time as you work together on a project. You also get a chance to encourage each other and have a few laughs a long the way and that’s good for any marriage.
