More Ways to Save Money on Weird and Wacky Travel

Why book a trip to an overpriced amusement park when you can visit the world’s largest ball of yarn for much less? Seriously, there is an entire nation filled with quirky travel attractions just waiting to be discovered. Just thumb though a copy of “Weird U.S.: Your Travel Guide to America’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets” by Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman and you’ll see what I mean.

The travel guide has inspired a slew of hotel deals that are being offered to families looking to spice up their traditional vacations with a trip to a weird and wacky destination.

Take a look:

DELAWARE

Wilmington’s museums, mansions, and world-class botanical gardens are all fabulous attractions to see, but if you are looking for something that will really add some kick to your family’s next holiday consider checking out the Ticking Grave in Lindenberg. The grave’s ticking noise is said to have inspired the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe. Not far from the site are some other odd attractions such as Philadelphia’s Mutter Museum, dedicated to medical oddities; a tree in Villanova, Pennsylvania that’s mysteriously covered in chocolates and flowers at all times; and the Littlest Church near Marsh Creek State Park in Downington, Pennsylvania. This particular deal has you spending the night at the 266-room Hilton Wilmington/Christiana for just $139. The package includes breakfast and a copy of “Weird U.S.: Your Travel Guide to America’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets.”

MARYLAND

Baltimore is Maryland’s largest city and is filled with creepy attractions, including the Exorcist House—-the home of the boy whose real-life story inspired the 1973 horror movie—-is just forty minutes south of Baltimore in Cottage City. Other sites include the covered Jericho Bridge, said to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl who burned to death there. The package includes one night at the Brookshire Suites, a 97-room hotel in the heart of the city’s Inner Harbor, free breakfast, and a copy of the travel guide for just $199 per room per night.
