More Ways to Save on Labor Day Getaways

The long Labor Day weekend is just around the corner. Traditionally, it’s the last chance for families to get in a vacation before the start of the new school year. However, if you are pinching pennies this summer, then you may be thinking twice about heading out of Dodge for the weekend.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can save on Labor Day travel, including:

Amtrak: The nation’s largest passenger rail service is still offering its “Kids Ride Free” deal. Families taking the train to the New York State Fair in Syracuse this Labor Day can really save big when departing from Manhattan and beyond.

Airlines: A number of airlines are offering end of the summer bargains, including JetBlue and United. The trick to scoring stellar deals is to book right away and be flexible with your flight schedules. Another way to save on airfare is to enter a major contest run by Boston’s Logan airport and JetBlue. The two have joined forces to give away a pair of the popular — and sold out — All You Can Jet passes good for a month of unlimited travel on JetBlue starting the day after Labor Day, September 7th. To enter you have to tweet the best haiku, limerick, verse or image explaining where you’d go if you win the passes. Contest rules are online.

Restaurants: One of the best ways to save on family vacations is to pack your own meals. Stock up on snacks and fill a cooler with your favorite foods and beverages, then chow down at rest stops, parks or in your hotel room. When you get tired of that routine, then hit up restaurants offering big discounts during the Labor Day holiday weekend. In Boston you can get a two-course lunch for $15 or a three-course dinner for $33 at select eateries through Labor Day. The city also has a free Family-Friend Value Pass, which is good through October. It offers significant discounts at restaurants, museums and attractions throughout the city.
