More Wild and Wacky Travel Fun

If you are looking to take the adventure of a lifetime start planning now. Some of this country’s wildest and wackiest events are just a few months away. Book your reservations now if you want to taste the nation’s best water, bowl with frozen turkeys or fling dried cow chips across an open field.

MINNESOTA

Each winter International Falls, Minnesota hosts its annual Icebox Days. The popular event pits city council members from the northern town against lawmakers from its sister city, Fort Frances, across the Canadian border, to a snowshoe race as part of a four-day festival embracing the area’s chilly winters. Other activities open to the public include a snowshoe hike, the “Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard” 10K and 5K runs, and outdoor bowling with frozen turkeys. The event runs from January 15-18, 2009.

WEST VIRGINIA

From February 19-22, 2008 Berkeley Springs, West Virginia won’t have a single parched visitor. That’s when the International Water Tasting celebration gets underway and more than 100 water entries from around the globe will compete in a blind tasting. Visitors to the event can sip samples, vote in a best-package-design contest and just soak in the atmosphere in the historic spa town, which boasts three times as many massage therapists as lawyers and claims it was visited by a young George Washington for the healing power of its natural springs.

ARIZONA

Live bands, kid-friendly rides, and more than 150 crafts and food vendors, and a whole lotta ostrich will be featured at the Ostrich Festival in Chandler, Arizona next February. Though, all of the aforementioned festivities simply serve as the backdrop to the weekend’s main event–a series of ostrich races with human participants hanging on for dear life.

OKLAHOMA

The nine-day Cimarron Territory Celebration in Beaver, Oklahoma is packed with a kiddie parade and horseshoe throwing, but the main attraction culminates on the third Saturday of each April during the World Cow Chip Throwing Championships when men and women fling dried cow chips with all their might across an open field.
